TYPES OF MATERIAL FLAWS

TYPES OF MATERIAL FLAWS

Determining whether an object is acceptable for final use this is called final inspection. Determining whether an existing object already in use is acceptable for continuous use, this is called in service inspection.

On the behalf of this experiment acceptable limit is decided if a material or weld joint contain the impurities more than acceptable limit called flaws.

Flaws can be divided in two categories that is volumetric flaws and planner flaws.

Volumetric flaws -

Three dimensional flaws or volume flaws, defect that count in this group are given

  1. Porosity,
  2. Slag inclusion,
  3. Tungsten inclusion,
  4. Corrosion pitting,
  5. Corrosion thinning,
  6. Shrinkages,
  7. Holes and voids.

And this type of flaws can be detected by following method

  1. Visual ( surface )
  2. Replica (surface )
  3. liquid penetrate test (surface)
  4. Magnetic  testing ( surface and sub surface )
  5. Eddy current
  6. Microwave
  7. Ultrasonic testing
  8. Radiography testing
  9. Thermograph
  10. Optical holography.

Planner flaws – in such flaws thinning is one dimension flaw but larger than other and other are two dimension flaws. This type of flaws can be divided in two parts first is surface and other is interior. Flaws that include in such type are given below.

  1. lack of bonding
  2. Forging or rolling
  3. Casting cold shut
  4. Plating cracks
  5. Fatigue cracks
  6. Welding cracks
  7. Lack of fusion
  8. Brazing bond

Method for detection of surface and interior are given below.

Surface-

  1. Visual
  2. Replica
  3. Liquid penetrate test
  4. Magnetic current
  5. Eddy current

Interior –

  1. Radiography
  2. Ultrasonic testing
  3. Microwave
  4. Tomography
  5. Optical holography
