NON FERROUS METALS AND ALLOYS

As time passed development of chemical and petrochemical industries takes place and the demand for alloy that is corrosion resistance to variety of chemicals also increases. For this purpose inventions of newer and newer alloys are carried out for safe and continuous process. Non ferrous metals and alloys play vital in this application.

Non ferrous metal alloys such as copper, brass, bronze, titanium and aluminium offer excellent corrosion resistance to a variety of chemicals, inorganic acids and sea water. The main limitation of using non ferrous metal alloys is the low melting point and low strength as compare to steel, So heavy engineering application is limited to ferrous alloy only.

Titanium- titanium is an alloy that is as light as aluminium but having strength as comparable to steel. But availability of titanium is very rare and its price is very higher so it is limited to use in defense and aerospace industries.

Copper – copper and copper alloy are widely used in corrosive applications. Copper is widely used in electrical industries because of its supreme conductive prosperities, Brass  is an alloy of copper and zinc . Admiralty brass and naval brass are material used in sea water application with excellent corrosion resistance.

 Aluminium – Aluminium is light weight metal so with proper proportion of alloy its strength Can be increased with maintaining a low density.  So this is widely used in aerospace industries. it can be casting by send and injection molding , rolled to any desire thickness, hammered , forged and extrude to any conceivable shape.  

Nickel – Nickel is alloying element that are widely used in stainless steel, inconel alloy, monel alloy. Monel is alloy of nickel and copper ( 70 % - 30% )  and it is widely used for corrosion resistance against hydro fluoric acid and sea water application.
